Some of my DVDs will not play on my set top player.

If some DVDs play and some won't more than likely it is because your player does not support DVD-R discs.  In most cases if your player is 3 years old or older it probably won't play. Please refer to your user manual to see what type of discs your player supports. Or you can possibly find your player listed here.  http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers
